The perfume revolves around Patchouli, in a decadent and sumptuous interpretation. The opening immediately puts on the table the powerful weapons: an intense, almost boozy patchouli and leather. It is somehow wild and carefree, dangerously dressed in leather but playful. The dry-down gets softer and more complex, thanks to a dirty iris butter which makes the whole atmosphere smoother and more intriguing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDon’t get fooled by iris, no romance is going on here: tobacco leaves are rolled, the leather jacket is eventually thrown somewhere, and the delightful and tempting smell of skin finally emerges. Many intertwined reasons and personal mental associations led me to this creation and its title. This perfume is conceived to be as tempting as chocolate stuck all over your fingers and you cannot help but licking them. Mind you: this is not a gourmand fragrance, and licking your fingers is a metaphor referring to other kind of irresistible temptations.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne major reference is surely the iconic album from 1971. I love rock, and the 70s for what they brought in music, but especially, I love that album cover. It accompanied me for a long while, as a vinyl record shop just around the corner was displaying it on its window, and I was exposed to it every day. I was charmed by this character for his stoic commitment to his cause, his loyalty, and his Spartan way of life – despite his noble origins.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe perfume tries to depict the atmosphere of a military camp, starting with the smell of wild shrubs, then the smoke of camp fire and the odour of horse tacks. The evolution then delves deeper into the soul of this stern character, revealing the presence of a secret mistress, with a powdery rose rounding up the deep core made of vetiver. I didn’t add any typical animalistic note as the intensity of Vetiver, together with the smokiness of leather, already carried it through. The vintage, old-style twist was not voluntary but a necessary consequence of my idea of a femininity of past times, where women had a wooden boudoir and spent hours to put powder and other beauty secrets on their face and body, and didn’t care to affirm themselves through a career but would exert their power through Beauty and Seduction. Then I softened the powdery-iris-rose part by adding a mixture of resins, representing a dirty experienced sensuality.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome movies and books provided me with inspiration. Les Liaisons Dangereuses, for instance, represented exactly the sophisticated and corrupted atmosphere I had in mind! Another beautiful memory is Marie Antoinette as depicted in Sofia Coppola’s movie. I obviously like Rococo, but what I like specifically in that movie is the femininity she represents: shoes, sins, libertinage, cakes, and absolute mindlessness, without any guiltiness. Some reviewers have compared Angel’s Dust to some Guerlain mythological scents (Luca Turin mentioned Guet-Apens \/ Attrape Coeurs). Salome by Gustave Moreau is a painting that can evoke the splendour and drama of this olfactory work in images. The beautiful mosaics of the Byzantine civilisation, such as those of Ravenna, have gleaming gold tesserae which are imperfect for being worn out over time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis sense of theatrical and luminous splendour accompanied by a dark and obscure side inspired Byzantine Amber. The geranium – pulpy, rosy, spicy, slightly green, contrasts with the dry minerality of the ambergris and styrax. The backbones of this work is a familiar structure, an ambery accord enriched by the spice that makes it sensual: cinnamon. These woods are full of wonders! The smell of typical Mediterranean vegetation is charming and, if you are lucky (or unfortunate…) you could bump into a wild boar – or even some remains of the Etruscan civilisation. The salty, refreshing smell of the sea soothes you from the heat of the sun that is warming up your skin.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe second source of inspiration is my personal research on masterpieces of perfumery, as I have recently been intrigued by the classical masculine citrusy cologne – not the light ones, but those with a strong character. This is the first release of the line FREEFALL, opening to new directions in my work. Those perfumes were for me the beginning of dipping into new waters: adulthood, love, sex, romance, adventure. Its formula is very complex, made up by lots of components which I tried to mix in the smoothest way I could. So many components that, if you ask me, I have to look up the formula, the pyramid being just a synthesis.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe funny thing is, I worked so much on the balance of so many ingredients that I forgot how it all started. It all started in Marrakesh, one of my favorite city, which I visited at 28 and then 39, always coming back with plenty of fake oils, scented stones, resins to burn, carpets, swords, and other useless but crucial objects. Last time I came back with many smelly bottles, among which a deliciously fake oud oil. I have never been a fan of it — as it was so fashionable lately, and I really hate trends — but this one is different. So, once home, I tried to make my own base inspired by this Moroccan fake oud, thus creating a sticky sweet woody smoky oriental stuff, which I called ‘My Oud’.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome time after, I started my Dark Side project (at the time named ‘Into Darkness’) and integrated this base in it. It represents the contradictions between sense and sensibility, prudery and passion. The lovers are driven by desire but their education holds them back.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRich in natural raw materials, jasmin and leather are the protagonists of this perfume. I used a beautiful Egyptian jasmin to create a slightly narcotic accord, which best combines with leather. In this base, I used some castoreum rendered in a sophisticated way, yet keeping its animalic facets.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe opening renders the shy but sparkling mood of the very moment they meet, with bergamot, honey and a touch of aldehydes. A vague smell of pollen evokes the nights of early spring, when peach trees are in blossom and release their scent in the fresh air. Then, attraction and romance trap the lovers, and a narcotic jasmin softened by a powdery rose represents this tension. Last time I came back with many smelly bottles, among which a deliciously fake oud oil. I have never been a fan of it — as it was so fashionable lately, and I really hate trends — but this one is different. So, once home, I tried to make my own base inspired by this Moroccan fake oud, thus creating a sticky sweet woody smoky oriental stuff, which I called ‘My Oud’.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome time after, I started my Dark Side project (at the time named ‘Into Darkness’) and integrated this base in it. The evolution then delves deeper into the soul of this stern character, revealing the presence of a secret mistress, with a powdery rose rounding up the deep core made of vetiver. I didn’t add any typical animalistic note as the intensity of Vetiver, together with the smokiness of leather, already carried it through. But now I smelled it again, with a new nose. I worked on a special amber accord, I would say — a human one.
