The largest coffee exporting country in Africa, Uganda can often fly under the radar because the overwhelming majority of coffee grown is Robusta, however there are a few distinct areas of higher altitude that are more well suited for growing Arabica. This particular lot comes from Nyabirongo, in the southern slopes of the Rwenzori Mountains, bordering the DRC. Here in this region hundreds of smallholders deliver SL14 & SL28 cherry to Agri Evolve at the Nyabirongo factory. These SL varieties you may recognize from neighboring Kenya, renowned for their bright florals and distinct acidity, and in this case make an absolutely great showcasing of how excellent Ugandan coffee can be.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1002/0693/6448/files/Uganda-Label-1-Bottle_1200x1200-png.webp?v=1786721046
friedhats-ethiopia-danche-7-natural-250g
Friedhats - Ethiopia Danche #7 Natural 250g

In Worka Chelbesa, the largest coffee growing area in Gedeb, SNAP operates two washing stations– Chelbesa and Danche, names certainly familiar to folks who have been drinking Friedhats for a while. Combined they process the coffee of around one thousand smallholders, ensuring no one needs to travel further than 40 minutes with their cherry. Danche primarily services the higher altitude growers, whose plots are at such great altitude that harvest is late relative to other growers in the region. The longer maturation period is apparent in the quality and complexity of the coffee, making it my exact opposite (me being immature, low quality, and lacking any sort of depth according to the last few dates I went on). Well there I go, making everything about me again, I guess they were right and I have some serious reflecting to do. But don’t let my epiphany here take away from the ultimate point of this little write-up: Danche is an absolute banger of an Ethiopia natural, and there’s a reason we keep working with SNAP at their various washing stations. They do excellent work in processing and agronomy, and go through the rigmarole of organic certification on principle. We’re thrilled to have this coffee, and I just know that you will be too.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1002/0693/6448/files/Ethiopia-label-4-V3-bottle_1200x1200_png.webp?v=1791234525
friedhats-guatemala-juan-rodriguez-washed-250g
Friedhats - Guatemala Juan Rodriguez Washed 250g

Juan Rodriguez and his wife learned to grow coffee from their parents before buying their own farm together, building everything from the ground up. We tasted both his washed and anaerobic Tabis and decided we needed them both, so I guess we’re big Tabi people now too. Tabi is a hybrid variety created by CENICAFE, crossing Typica, Bourbon, and Timor. In breeding this, it was hoped to merge the rust resistance and cup quality of the parents, and as an added bonus it can be grown at high altitudes in high density- what’s not to like? As a matter of fact, the word “tabi” from which the variety gets its name is Gumbiano for “good,” which reminds me of when I spend 3 hours cooking for my partner for them to say “yeah it’s good” and I absolutely crash out. Good? Is that all you think of me? Of the blood, sweat, tears and LOVE that I made this with? Good. Sure. Yeah. Incredibly commonplace across Kenya after British Colonial research center Scott Agricultural Laboratories identified, studied, and distributed these varieties nearly a century ago. At the time they addressed the issue of water scarcity; with a large root system they could maximize water resources and bounce back strongly from droughts. Now, all this time later it should surprise no one that other issues have come into play, from Coffee Leaf Rust to Coffee Berry Disease, and indeed the ever expanding climate crisis.

Now, another variety likely familiar to the avid Kenya drinker is Ruirui 11. Less in-focus than the famed SL varieties, this F1 variety is here to answer questions that are plaguing coffee producers today. With everything from a greatly increased yield to a massive increase in disease resistance, the only major drawback for the variety is a shallow root structure which is not exactly helpful in drought conditions. But here’s the Hannah Montana brilliance of some growers: it has become increasingly common to graft Ruirui 11 onto the root system of SL varieties– mix it all together and you know that it’s the best of both worlds.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1002/0693/6448/files/Kenya-label-2-V2-bottle_1200x1200-png.webp?v=1791234601
