Orb Grinder

Consider the Orb Grinder as your secret ingredient in chef-style cooking.

Designed by Gareth Neal – an East London studio that combines traditional craftsmanship with contemporary techniques – the salt-and-pepper mill is as much of an objet d’art on the worktop as it is an essential tool in your kitchen.

Made from solid beech and available in a natural or black finish, it features a distinctive cylindrical base and spherical top, making for an organic form that fits your grip perfectly and feels smooth under the fingertips.

Its crowning glory is the ceramic CrushGrind mechanism that enables the coarseness of the grind to be adjusted with a simple turn of the wheel at the base. A fine dusting for delicate seasoning; a coarse grind for intensive flavouring.

Invest in a designer mill for professional results.

Designed by Gareth Neal

There are furniture makers who are great craftsmen, and there are those who are great designers. Gareth Neal is a rare find. He’s both.

-Christopher Wilk, V&A Museum.

A piece created by Gareth Neal is the first thing that visitors see at the Victoria and Albert museum’s furniture gallery. But the soft-spoken Briton actually considers his mission to be much more than just designing and making furniture.

He is passionate about honouring “people, process and place. I try to keep it local,” he said, by championing the use of indigenous materials and traditional processes while at the same time exploring new ones. And he also makes an effort to respect the environment.

Gareth Neal believes that as a hands-on designer and maker, he is fascinated by process, whether that be with traditional tools or the latest computer controlled router. This, combined with a fascination of historical techniques and aesthetics, roots his design within a specific context with rich narratives and contextual reference points. Good design emanates from a depth of knowledge of the medium, and his ability to reconsider it for a contemporary audience.

MEET THE BRAND

Case

Case was founded by Paul Newman in 2006. After graduating from Hornsey College of Art in 1981 with a BA Furniture degree, Newman launched his first business Bonomi Design alongside two college friends in North London. They designed and made products for a variety of clients including Liberty’s, Heal’s & Ron Arad. In 1988, the company received a grant to exhibit their range of stools and chairs at the prestigious Milan Furniture Fair. It was here that Paul met Australian retailer Aero, who had five successful stores across the country. Excited about Paul’s new collection, Aero started to produce the product range under licence.

In 1989, Paul’s entrepreneurial business acumen led to the opening of a UK franchise of Aero in Westbourne Grove, West London, selling an eclectic mix of contemporary furniture, lighting and accessories. With its adventurous and eclectic collection, Aero soon rose to prominence, and by 1998, Aero was a shop, retail and wholesale business selling to high end design stores such as Heals and the Conran shop. Ahead of its time in many ways, the business also included a successful mail-order catalogue.

Aero was sold in 1999, and Newman went on to set up the eponymous design brand Case with more than 20 years of experience in design, manufacturing and retail behind him. The motivation behind Case was simple: to create authored product at affordable prices using modern manufacturing techniques. The initial product range included pieces by Matthew Hilton, Terrence Woodgate, Naz Kamali, formerly the creative director at Aero. These collections are now carried in some of the most prestigious retail stores across the world.
