Amber follows the wearer through their day, evolving as the hours pass and bringing out different component notes as the tempo changes. Its dynamic burst of grassiness and greenery matches the energy of morning, subtly maturing into rich spice as the day continues. Closing notes of warm, earthy wood and balmy ambergris bring a more subdued, reflective tone to the fragrance as evening draws in.

“We wanted to create a scent that was full of energy in the morning (strong, lively citrus notes at the top), calmer by lunchtime, and mellow in the evening (woody and dry tobacco notes at the base). An olfactory mood enhancer.”
The second scent owes its existence to a gorse-lined driveway in Provence. Captivated by the coconut-infused air surrounding the yellow flowers of the gorse bushes, “we set about creating a scent that captured the essence of summer in the countryside.”
The result is a fresh, crisp fragrance that transports the wearer to sun-kissed heathlands along the coast. Opening with invigorating top note of citrus, and of course, the delightful coconut hit of the gorse flower, the scent is given a spicy depth by the suggestion of cardamom beneath.

“When I was a child, my parents would drive us overnight from London to their holiday house in Provence in a battered Peugeot 205. As we arrived, after the 13-hour drive, we would open the car windows to let in the morning heat, hear the crunch of the pebbles on the drive, and breathe in the tantalisingly fresh smell of the passing gorse bushes. The holiday had begun.”
The fragrances we create at Laboratory Perfumes often start with a single aroma. In Samphire’s case, it was a young leaf of verbena plucked from a friend’s garden on a spring afternoon. The scent was so arrestingly fresh, “we decided to find a way to capture its zesty rush for our third fragrance.”
Crushed a sprig of that verbena with a pinch of juniper berries from the spice rack – and Samphire began to take shape. Moving from the kitchen to the lab, we blended in citrus oil, flourishes of lavender, basil and rosemary, and base notes of white amber and oak moss to create a bright, cool, aromatic scent with a lightness of touch that belies its complexity and longevity on the skin. The finished scent was so clearly evocative of the seashore we could only call it Samphire.

“The idea for our Samphire scent came after a lazy Sunday lunch in Hammersmith rather than a swim off the Suffolk coast. Foregoing coffee for a fresh sprig of verbena from the garden, I was immediately captivated by its fresh and zesty aroma. It all began there.”

British scent specialists Laboratory Perfumes was founded in 2011. The appeal of fragrance was not only its longevity, but the way a scent manages to be both personal and invisible.
Laboratory Perfumes is run by a small, dedicated team based in London.
“We are all proud of the fact that everything we create is as sustainable as possible. — At Laboratory Perfumes, we try to look after the world. After all, it’s where both the inspiration and the ingredients for our fragrances come from. We know that by creating and selling scents and candles we’re not going to save the planet, but we work hard to ensure that we do the least damage possible.”
