Seascape Vessels

Made using black and white porcelain, combined, thrown and jigger jollied. After the first firing each piece is sanded back to reveal layers of embedded mark and tone; the inside is glazed in a satin white before being fired for a second time to 1260°C. When taken from the kiln, each piece is then polished by hand to create a soft and tactile finish.

‘I am fascinated by industrial process and adapt traditional casting techniques to make handcrafted design. I am excited by how an extensive understanding into a craft offers the opportunity to push and explore a material, and challenge a process. I make ceramic and glass objects which consider the domestic and ritual of everyday life, however the pieces I make are not always traditionally functional and often allow only for reflection.’

Celia Dowson

Celia Dowson is a London based artist working in both ceramics and cast glass. Inspired by the movement in nature her work reflects the colours, the changing light, and mystery of the natural world. Porcelain vessels, embedded with mark and gesture, capture an evolving landscape. Fascinated by industrial processes Celia adapts traditional modelling and casting techniques to make bespoke pieces to use and display. Techniques used in both the making of glass and ceramics are crossed and re-applied so that unique forms and surface finishes are achieved.

Celia Dowson graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2018 specialising in both ceramics and cast glass. She received a BA (Hons) in Ceramic Design from the University of the Arts London, Central Saint Martins, 2014. Her most recent exhibitions include Young Masters at London Glass Blowing 2020, Collect 2020 at Somerset House and Future Heritage 2019 at Decorex International. Celia’s work is part of two museum collections, Bullseye Projects in Portland, USA and the New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum, Taiwan, where she completed a 3 month ceramics residency in 2019.
