Against a backdrop of growing cities and a changing approach to how we live, there are many reasons to refurbish a home. Our buildings must continue to evolve along with us—and that takes a little imagination. Societal shifts continue to impact our homes. People live longer, and often alone. Homes will need to be updated to accommodate a changing climate. Resourcefulness will also play a role in how we carve out living spaces in our cramped cities. Today’s population living in cities is 3.9 billion, and it’s anticipated to grow to 6.34 billion over the next 25 years. The vast majority of the planet’s population now lives in an urban environment, which is a first in human history. These numbers are only going to grow, and increasingly this means not bulldozing and building on top of the rubble, but working with what we have.

The Home Upgrade looks beyond big budget projects and explores homes where the seemingly impossible has been achieved. For architects striking out on their own, such projects offer the opportunity to flex their muscles and lead a project for the first time. A home in Brooklyn, featured in the book, was refurbished after Hurricane Sandy ravaged the Eastern Seaboard in 2012. The living space was raised above the high-water line, an answer to the grim fact that once-in-a-generation occurrences are a new reality.

Historic conversions celebrate the unexpected relationship between old and new, and adaptive reuse projects reinvent the buildings around us. Exploring the most extraordinary transformations of recent years by leading studios, The Home Upgrade is an exhilarating look at the boundless possibilities of reimagining a home.

Tessa Pearson

“A writer and editor and with 15 years’ multidisciplinary experience, I work primarily with creative agencies, luxury brands, book publishers and market-leading consumer titles. My skill set spans communications and content strategy, conceptual copywriting, long-form journalism and storytelling in any form. I enjoy collaborating closely with art directors and designers to create work with exceptional aesthetic appeal and have been contributing to ELLE Decoration for over 10 years. I’m also a co-founder of London-based creative studio Made Good.

My primary areas of expertise and interest are design, architecture, interiors, travel, food and wellbeing. Brands, agencies and publishers I’ve worked with and written for include: Phaidon, Gestalten, Hearst UK, Condé Nast, Guardian News and Media, Winkreative, AMVBBDO, The Barbican, Mandarin Oriental, Relais & Châteaux, Carl Hansen & Søn, The Embassy of Japan, John Lewis and Marks & Spencer.”

“gestalten continues to actively reimagine the way in which we approach publishing. With our extensive range of titles, we not only seek to enhance and to enrich our reader’s lives, but to continually engage with the surrounding creative landscape.

Our origin story began with a focus on the aesthetic, particularly that of graphic design and, over the last two decades, the scope of both our content and our expertise has widened. Today, using a myriad of observations of culture, people, art, and other intimate inspirational informants, we document and anticipate vital movements in architecture, visual culture, design & fashion, escapism, food & beverages, travel, and contemporary art.”

In 2014, Little Gestalten joined the literary ranks and ensured that there was a place for readers of all ages within the world of gestalten.

The gestalten narrative exists beyond the textual realm; regardless of the medium at hand, gestalten wishes to inform and inspire our community. We welcome you to enter gestalten’s world of creative culture whether between our pages, indulging in images and films online, or at one of our international events. We look forward to the result: mutual inspiration.
