Margate, UK

Haeckels is a natural skincare and wild fragrance company based in Margate. Haeckels was founded in 2012 by volunteer beach warden and coastal enthusiast Dom Bridges. Disillusioned by the production ethos of many larger skincare companies, Dom wanted to create simple handcrafted products that showcased the surrounding coasts natural ingredients in the hope that the products themselves would then promote Margate’s heritage of healthy coastal living.

Fragrance

Ancient forest; the fragrance of nature at its wildest, crab apple, purple orchid and cedarwood. Distilled from the essence of Blean Woods in July, this scent is fruity, fresh, but grounding.

Reminiscent of rain on chalk reef, a fresh and clear fragrance of ozone, jasmine and amber. Botany opens with immediate freshness before refreshing marine with subdued floral notes of jasmine and lavender take over. Warming amber with musk anchor the fragrance, which mellows out with a comforting embrace.

Inspired by 19th-century amusement park Dreamland in New York, this scent evokes a charred historic rollercoaster; sprawling ornamental rose gardens, and the depth of days gone by. The fragrance is rooted in a heady base of leather, tobacco, and vetiver.

Inspired by Pegwell Bay, this fragrance evokes unkempt nature. Opening with sweet fennel balanced with birch, the heart notes uncover an intricate dance between juniper’s ethereal coolness and the smouldering allure of black pepper. Heady and grounding, a base of vetiver and musk leave a trail in their wake.

A fragrance that evokes salt water spray, cassis and oud – Reculver is a prominent parfum meant for dancing and exploring; that friend that takes your hand and shows you something you’ve never seen before. Zesty green mandarin and luscious cassis invigorate the senses. Honeyed neroli blooms before cedarwood and smoky oud linger on the skin like a cherished memory.

Inspired by a winding country path in Richborough; essence of elderberry, spearmint and bindweed are distilled into this Intrinsically English scent. Richborough captures the brisk freshness on a secluded, rainy, lane in summertime.

Reminiscent of a moss-covered cemetery; sombre mist, past and present combined. St John opens with fir, petitgrain, and star anise. A heart of clove and smoked wood deepens into cedar, musk with a sticky, warm resin which lingers on…

Evokes an uninhabited bay; man-made structures that bridge land and sea, and a crisp fragrance of salt, sweet pea and musk. Walpole encapsulates sea spray and a coastal breeze. It’s heart beats a delicate duet of sweet pea and gentle rose petals. The fragrance takes on an earthy tone with grounding notes of moss, amber, and musk.

When Haeckels was just starting out Dom would collect seaweed and local botanicals along the Margate coast and bring them to bring back to his family kitchen to experiment. Dom’s wife Jo soon said it was time to get a proper lab and turn a passion into a business as every saucepan in the kitchen was starting to smell like a skincare product. Taking his wife’s advice he acquired the lab on Cliff Terrace in 2013 where more product formulas were developed to complete the range. The company has now grown; taking on members of staff whilst still playing an active part in the local community by organising beach cleans and taking part in marine conservation surveys.
Haeckels use seaweed as the base for all of their products for its hydrating properties – it’s rich with valuable vitamins, minerals and amino acids; it’s anti-bacterial, skin rebuilding and anti-inflammatory; it’s all-natural, and all around us. The seaweed in Haeckels products is picked by hand in from the beach in Margate, UK.
Haeckels is driven by trying to solve the waste problem – be that through the use of natural resources in products, or presenting packaging solutions that are fully recyclable or compostable. As Haeckels develops over the coming years the heart of the company will always remain the same as it concentrates on craft first in the hope that the products themselves will remind and educate customers of the natural wealth of Margate’s coastline.
