Known as a playground for the mafia and wealthy elite, Havana in the mid-1900s hosted many vibrant music venues like the Tropicana or the members’ guild Buena Vista Social Club. The rhythmic pulsations of Habanera, Latin Jazz and Salsa that were heard everywhere coupled with the dazzling showgirls added to the tropical island’s allure. After the revolution in 1959 many establishments closed down and with that an era of Havana ended. The scent La Habana by 19-69 shines a light on the golden musical era of Cuba between the 1930s and 1950s.
19-69
19-69 was founded by Swedish artist, Johan Bergelin, and his wife Catharina, in 2015. The brand launched their first five fragrances in 2017, following a 2 year immersive creative process involving artists from Italy and Scandinavia. Each scent is composed inspired by a different era, culture or setting from Africa, Europe, the US and Asia. Art, music, trends and cultures have all left their marks on the fragrances both in terms of content, name and packaging.
An artist and creative since young, Bergelin has experimented with a variety of artistic disciplines. The early stages of his practice saw works manifest through photography, canvas, wood and PVC. Local to Sweden, Bergelin has developed an artistic practice spanning over 35 years and counting.
The brand is named after the year 1969, which for Bergelin, encapsulates a moment in history in which freedom and tolerance were at an all-time high. It’s these same values that inspire the fragrances and the stories behind each of them.
