Meet the Brand

Modern Theory

Meet Michelle Tu, the founder of Modern Theory, a California-based home fragrance brand that began with an unexpected career change. After earning a PhD in cellular biology and working in skincare, Michelle found herself craving a more creative outlet. She began making candles as a hobby, creating sophisticated fragrances inspired by the boutique scents she loved, but at a more accessible price point.

Modern Theory officially launched in 2019 with just $1000 and 100 candles, which sold out overnight. What began as a creative side project quickly became Michelle’s central focus, allowing her to bring together her scientific background, passion for design and commitment to more considered, sustainable products.

Today Modern Theory creates candles and home fragrances designed to bring a sense of calm and character to everyday spaces. The brand is known for contemporary scent combinations and a clean, minimal aesthetic. Its products are vegan and made without phthalates or parabens, with lead-free wicks.

At the heart of Modern Theory is Michelle’s belief that there is freedom in stepping away from expectations and following what inspires you. Her journey from scientist to candlemaker is a reminder that sometimes the most interesting ideas come from combining worlds that don’t initially seem connected, and that a new chapter can begin with something as simple as lighting a candle.
