Studio Arhoj
Studio Arhoj is a Danish design studio founded by Anders Arhoj in 2013. A former graphic designer, Arhoj tried his hand at pottery in 2010 where he made early prototypes of the now-famous Arhoj Studio ‘Ghost’. He presented these at a design fair in 2011 and to his surprise, there were a number of orders.
Anders continues to refine the ghost over the coming years, experimenting with different clays and glazes, and learning more and more skills at the pottery wheel. To keep up with the demand, he commissions a couple of local potters to help him, and sets up a small ceramics studio in his parents’ garage in Thy, Denmark (around 5 hours from Copenhagen).
The studio continues to grow and in 2013, Studio Arhoj is officially incorporated. Operations move to Islands Brugge and Anders hires someone to help him with the day-to-day organisation and packing of orders. In 2020, the studio moves to a much larger space in central Copenhagen, fulfilling Anders’ dream of building a house of design and production in the middle of the city.
The flagship lifestyle store opens to the public, and the team at Studio Arhoj expand into glassblowing. The space is split into 5 sections – the lifestyle store; the pottery, where a team of four potters throw stoneware and earthenware; the hot shop, where a team of two craftspeople blow glass; the glaze department, where all of the ceramics are glazed; and finally, The Design Atelier. The Design Atelier is where new ideas are thrown around, collaborations with other makers are managed, and unique items and one-off collections are designed and coordinated. Often this is where Anders Arhoj is found today.
”There is no shortage of ideas floating around the studio at any given time, only a shortage of time and hands. Having our own design team in-house allows quick turnarounds and making changes on a dime. We can discuss an idea on Monday and have it on the shelves by Friday. All of the manufacturing areas are visible to the public.”
