The Asemi Co. Matsushiro cup is characterised by its beautiful glaze, changing from dark brown to green and white into a rich blue. This effect is accomplished through a special method of the artisan, applying different naturally coloured glaze types.

The clay, retrieved from the surrounding mountains is rich in iron which can be seen in the reddish brown color of the material. The natural glazes are made of compositions of different ashes and metals such as copper for the green. The white glaze is made with the ashes of burned straw, which will turn into blue when reacting with the iron of the clay in the right composition.

The Asemi Co. Matsushiro cups are made by the artisan Tomoki Miyazaki. His workshop lies in the mountains of Matsushiro, Nagano, surrounded by peach trees. People solely travel to this rural area of Nagano to visit his showroom and take pottery classes. The variety of Mr. Miyazaki’s work ranges from big vases to small cups. Each piece is carefully handcrafted and brought to life through his wood fired kiln.

MEET THE MAKER

Asemi Co.

Asemi Co. is the brainchild of designers and long time friends Yuki Ishiguro & Lars Amhof. The name Asemi Co. originates from “asemic writing”, a wordless open semantic form of writing – it is up to the reader to interpret the writing, no matter which language he speaks or where he is from.

Asemic art, after all, represents a kind of language that’s universal and lodged deep within our unconscious minds.
– Satu Kaikkonen

Enraptured by traditional craftsmanship, Lars & Yuki got together in 2015 to start the intercontinental endeavour that is now Asemi Co. Their mission is to preserve local traditional craftsmanship by combining various crafts with contemporary design and presenting it to a worldwide audience. The Asemi Co. cup leans on traditional shapes but with contemporary character. Each style has a unique look depending on the type of pottery it was created from.

With our creations we want to transport that philosophy over to design, creating products that are universally understood regardless of background or nationality and at the same time keep precious crafts alive in the fast paced world.
