Material: The Stoneware line is fired between 1100 & 1250 degrees Celsius, producing a product which is an intermediate between porcelain and pottery, as porcelain is typically fired at around 1300 degrees, and pottery at around 800 to 1100 degrees. In Japan, the resulting product is called “half-porcelain” or “Yakishime chinaware” (meaning high-fired unglazed ceramics).
Texture: Stoneware products are not glazed on the outside, and instead have a simple, sandy matte texture. The purpose of this is to recreate the same texture of traditional pottery. Conversely, there is a soft, smooth sheen on the inside of the ceramics, making them suitable for everyday use.
Colour: Every piece of the Stoneware Collection is available in seven different colours. The colouring is unique as colourants are kneaded into the clay itself. This allows the outside of the tableware to be coloured without glazing. The colours were carefully selected to compliment each other & their surroundings.
Handmade: Each piece is handmade one by one by talented craftsmen in Vietnam.
MOHEIM is a design and manufacturing company based in Tokyo, Japan, that combines traditional Japanese technique with modern Scandinavian minimalism design influence. The result of the collision of these two design practices is a simple but functional form which remains timeless. MOHEIM has produced a wide range of products from tableware to furniture, and they consistently strike an elegant balance between a quiet appearance that fits into the lives of its owners, and a sophisticated presence unique to MOHEIM’s products.
One of MOHEIM’s earlier prototypes – a swing bin – was described as “the most beautiful dustbin in the world” in 2010, because of its minimalist design and unprecedented structure. The design was presented at the Salone del Mobile in Milan, and was launched to market four years later as MOHEIM’s first product.
Since then, MOHEIM has introduced a variety of functional objects for living spaces. The products are conceptualised in Japan, & produced by traditional techniques coupled with advanced technology create modern, minimalist form, whilst maintaining the company’s environmental & ethical standards. MOHEIM’s objective is to enrich the lives of their customers through their designs.
The Stoneware Collection was designed by MOHEIM director & designer, Shigeichiro Takeuchi.
