Pigmentarium Genesis

GENESIS

A perfume as refreshing as an intense gasp. The first contact with the perfume stirs laurel dreamily rounded with aldehydes. Verbena, lily of the valley, and green apple symbolising fragile innocence sparkle in its heart. The scent of fig leaves, rosewood, musk, and ambergris develops in the base of the perfume. Together they evoke a sense of knowledge. Genesis evokes the innocence each of us used to have inside.

GENESIS x TEREZA ŠTĚTINOVÁ

Genesis, Pigmentarium’s sixth fragrance, was originally created for Czech sculptor, Tereza Štětinová, and was launched in Paris alongside a pop-up exhibition of thirteen of her marble sculptures. Both the fragrance and the sculpture collection share the same inspiration of water waves, and both share the same name – Genesis.

From the beginning, the colour of the Genesis project is green. Prominently glowing, it gives power to the concept and guides the creative process. It is the link between the initial idea and the resulting formulation.

“I wish to have a clean and refreshing scent that cools me down on hot summer days, but at the same time, it takes me to a green garden even if I am in the middle of the city.”

Tereza revealed to perfumer Jakub Hiermann during a former collaboration project with Pigmentarium. Jakub, who creates perfumes almost fundamentally based on his own imagination, was fascinated by the possibility of immersing himself in Tereza’s vision – of being lead by an imagination other than his own. As the concept grew, references to Virginia Woolf’s novel ‘The Wave’ and the landscapes described in it, as well as the book of Genesis and the Garden of Eden formed further inspiration.

The result was a private and personal fragrance with remnants of citrus without actually containing any. The fragrance notes – laurel, verbena, fig leaves, green apple, lily of the valley and ambergris – form a crisp sweetness with a vibrant and refreshing verdancy which altogether leave the impression of citrus.

After more than a year of meticulous development the green fragrance was presented at an exhibition in Prague, where it received phenomenally positive feedback from the population, as well as its muse, Tereza Štětinová. The launch of the new scent took place on a sunny day at the Czech Centre located in the middle of the artistic Saint-Germain-des-Prés district, alongside Tereza’s Genesis sculptures, which capture the essence of water and the power of waves in marble.

PIGMENTARIUM CAMPAIGN 2022-2023

Heavy green curtains move behind large blocks of tinted glass. They reveal a model’s delicate silhouette in minimal styling. This is the fourth  Pigmentarium campaign by photographer Hana Knížová. The first, for Ad Libitum, won the prestigious Czech Grand Design award.

Pigmentarium are heavily influenced by twentieth century architectural works in Prague and surrounding. They have previously collaborated with artists in buildings by Adolf Loos – the Winterniz Villa and the Semler Residence. This collaboration took place at The New Stage of the National Theatre, by Czech architect Karel Prager.

The New Stage captures the essence of the brutalist architecture of the 1980s, combining intimacy with monumental conception. It is considered one of Prager’s masterpieces, in that it was an addition to the then 100-year-old historical building, resulting in both a sharp contrast and a breathtaking whole. The building boasts extensive tinted glass windows, impressive areas of green Cuban serpentine, and a unique facade of glass blocks by world-famous artists Libenský and Brychtová. Inside there is exceptional artistic lighting, and unexpected vistas through out the modern space within centuries old historical surroundings.

The charisma of the building is bountiful, thanks to artistic and ideologic investment, and reflects the values of the Pigmentarium brand – a connection of classical themes with a vibrant, modern presence.

MEET THE BRAND

Pigmentarium

Pigmentarium is a Czech fragrance house founded in 2018 by creative duo Tomas Ric and Jakub F. Hiermann. Jakub trained in perfumery in London before returning to his home city of Prague. Born from a passion for the profound stories that can be conveyed through scent, the name of the brand refers to the world of painting and the Latin inscriptions that dot the façades of Prague’s main buildings. Their olfactory creations are narratives captured in bottles – blending the finest ingredients with the art of perfumery.

Each fragrance is related to an artist or a cultural discovery. Pigmentarium does not see itself as a perfume brand, because it is focused on the art of living; it is a platform that also connects Czech artists and craftspeople to highlight the treasures of Prague.
— Tomas Ric, co-founder & CEO

The rich cultural history of Czech literature, music, and architecture, as well as the famous avant-garde movements, are channelled in the Pigmentarium fragrances. The brand regularly collaborate with contemporary artists from different fields, for example, Genesis was released with a series of photographs of Prague interiors by photographic artist Hana Knizová, in collaboration with an exhibition of artworks by sculptor Tereza Štětinová.

The brand’s latest collaboration took inspiration from the fine arts, leading to the limited-edition Prague Olibanum incense sticks. Contemporary Czech painter, Lucie Jindrák Skrivánková, designed the visual concept of the product, which evokes the scent of Prague’s old world. She worked with black, matte textures and gold decoration, giving a unique experience to the touch and representing the extravagance of the city and the brand.

Pigmentarium continue to collaborate with international artists, including poet Michaela Fenkl, sculptor Pauline Hagant, and fashion designer Arturo Obegero, all of whom have become ambassadors for the brand.

Sustainability, ethical practice, and locally driven thinking are the company’s core. The fragrances are produced by hand in the Pigmentarium atelier in Czechia, and the packaging is made by Studio Činčera, a family-owned company in Prague.
