About the Book

Shifting Spaces is a visual feast that merges history and architecture with a passion for interiors. The diverse collection of homes is sure to inspire – 14 individual homes in unique buildings that were originally completed for a purpose other than living. With the book, you can go on a very special tour of Finland to get to know soulful places, including a former church, a printing press, a mental hospital, a school and an officer’s academy. The charm of older buildings, cherishing the old and the ever-stacking layers of stories are an inseparable part of the present day of these homes. The duo behind the book, Maria Rautio and Pauliina Salonen, met through magazine, and have since recorded numerous wonderful homes in various interior design publications over the years.

About the Author

Maria Rautio is an interior designer and communications entrepreneur from Espoo, not far from Helsinki. In her work, Rautio specialises in and beautiful homes – architecture and interiors. The inspiration for the first work came when Rautio was living in the old Nikkilä mental hospital in Sipoo, which is now a protected area. The historical milieu included courtyard paths lined with oak trees, old houses and an interesting past, which gave its own unique stamp to living.

Pauliina Salonen is known as one of Finland’s most skilled interior designers. During her more than 15-year career, Salonen has worked for both magazines and numerous companies. Salonen’s recognisable style is to photograph the space in natural light, which creates an authentic and cozy atmosphere in the photos. The international bestseller Soft Nordic (2023), Nordic Interior Book (2019) and Cozy Homes from Finland (2016) include photography by Pauliina.
