Perfumer: Alie Kiral

She drafts an instant message to her best friend, the AOL screen the only light source in her room—teal-painted in the daylight, but everything looks dark purple at the late hour of 9:30 PM. “R u up?” Pressing send, she feels strangely vulnerable—a blast of cheap, “coconut-scented” detangling spray later, she realises her best friend’s hairs are still stuck in her plastic brush. There’s no response by ten, so she goes to bed with still-damp hair. She doesn’t know it yet, but she’ll think about this night with unspeakable longing once every five years until she dies.

Meet the Brand

Pearfat Parfum

Founded by Alie Kiral, Pearfat Parfum is an independent fragrance house made in the American Midwest, rooted in nostalgia, humour and a fascination with the way scent can connect us to memories, places and identity. A self-taught perfumer, Alie developed Pearfat from a personal desire to tell her own unconventional stories through fragrance, creating perfumes that feel playful, accessible and distinctly her own.
Alie’s relationship with fragrance began in childhood, when a bottle of Tinkerbell perfume sparked an enduring fascination with scent. Her interest deepened through working at Lush and discovering the more experimental side of niche perfumery. Pearfat eventually grew from a hobby into a full-time independent business, with Alie developing the fragrances herself and gradually building a loyal following through art fairs, independent retailers and fragrance events.

The collection takes inspiration from Midwestern childhood memories, classic fragrances, pop culture and the strange details of everyday life. Alie isn't afraid of unusual combinations or unexpected references: her perfumes can evoke everything from roadside flowers and summer rain to vinyl, seaweed, lime cola and the smell of a city street. Some compositions are rooted in personal memories, while others create entirely imagined worlds.

That sense of playfulness is balanced by a serious commitment to the craft of perfumery. Although largely self-taught, Alie has worked with mentors at the Institute for Art & Olfaction, developing a technical understanding of materials and formulation alongside her instinctive, experimental approach. Her philosophy is to take perfumery seriously without taking herself too seriously.

Pearfat's visual identity reflects the same DIY spirit. Bottles are deliberately minimal, with labels printed by hand and no unnecessary embellishment. What began partly as a practical choice has become an integral part of the brand's character: Alie sees the bottle as a kind of blank page, allowing the wearer to bring their own memories and associations to the fragrance rather than having the story dictated to them.

Today, Pearfat remains largely a hands-on operation in Griffith, Indiana, with Alie still closely involved in the creative and production process. The result is a fragrance house that feels personal rather than corporate, whimsical but technically accomplished, nostalgic but never predictable, and always willing to explore the stranger side of scent.
