Pigmentarium Ad Libitum

AD LIBITUM

So familiar, yet new. Chypre perfume Ad Libitum was inspired by the glow of the sunset over Prague Castle. The fading light of an energetic day symbolises the upcoming nightlife. The first contact is mediated by refreshing citruses elegantly covered by the touch of aldehydes. Delicate jasmine and monumental cedar develop the scent in its heart up to the unusual scent of moss, patchouli, and musk. It all results in an elegant and slightly nostalgic fragrance that mirrors Prague in the way it might have been seen by Adolf Loos and Le Corbusier.

AD LIBITUM CAMPAIGN

Introducing the fragrance through images. Unveiling the inspiration behind the new perfume. Witnessing dreamlike moments experienced by the people wearing it.

Rather than treating photographs taken after the creation of all of our new fragrances as part of a promotional campaign, we see them as the closing chapter of each perfume’s story. For the fourth time, the series of images were captured by the photographer Hana Knížová, who has been demonstrating a close-to-ideal creative connection to our vision. Our collaboration began two months before the Pigmentarium perfume house was ever introduced to the world, when she stepped behind the lens at the Winternitz Villa for the Ad Libitum shoot. Exploring hidden sexual tension and drawing on the unique interior of Adolf Loos’ renowned villa, Hana managed to imbue her photographs with a note of elegance and a touch of nostalgia, showcasing the brand’s one-of-a-kind style. Her series of photographs did not escape the public eye, earning her the 2018 Czech Grand Design Award in the Photographer of the Year category. Although the media caught onto the best of her pictures, hardly anyone has seen the collection in its entirety. Back then, Pigmentarium was an unknown emerging brand, but the second fragrance, Erotikon, was already on its way...

Set in the hot terraces and sunny rooms of the Winternitz villa. Hana Knížová’s photographed the Ad Libitum campaign on a very hot day in the Czech summer of 2018. She captures a spark between a woman and a possibly younger man behind billowing curtains whilst juicy citrus engulfs the hot air.

STUDY OF A DANCER

The name Ad Libitum, which can be roughly translated as “as you please” or “as you want”, is a symbol of free improvisation within the world of art. A moment of freedom within an artistic scheme when the performer expresses himself in his very own way, describing in part the predefined lecture with which he is entirely aligned.

The new pictorial composition is built at the moment of “Ad Lib”. In this creative collaboration, photographer Jan Grombiřík and filmmaker Anežka Horová, studied and captured the elaborate movements of Fraser Roach.

Fragrance and dance share many elements, from artistic curation to long-lasting impression on its recipient. But only one stands out so vividly that makes one wonder: are dance and perfume eternally intertwined as a language that anyone can interpret? As the curtain remains drawn on many of our cultural institutions, new star of The Czech National Ballet, Fraser Roach, shines a light on the connection between dance and fragrance.

MEET THE BRAND

Pigmentarium

Pigmentarium is a Czech fragrance house founded in 2018 by creative duo Tomas Ric and Jakub F. Hiermann. Jakub trained in perfumery in London before returning to his home city of Prague. Born from a passion for the profound stories that can be conveyed through scent, the name of the brand refers to the world of painting and the Latin inscriptions that dot the façades of Prague’s main buildings. Their olfactory creations are narratives captured in bottles – blending the finest ingredients with the art of perfumery.

Each fragrance is related to an artist or a cultural discovery. Pigmentarium does not see itself as a perfume brand, because it is focused on the art of living; it is a platform that also connects Czech artists and craftspeople to highlight the treasures of Prague.
— Tomas Ric, co-founder & CEO

The rich cultural history of Czech literature, music, and architecture, as well as the famous avant-garde movements, are channelled in the Pigmentarium fragrances. The brand regularly collaborate with contemporary artists from different fields, for example, Genesis was released with a series of photographs of Prague interiors by photographic artist Hana Knizová, in collaboration with an exhibition of artworks by sculptor Tereza Štětinová.

The brand’s latest collaboration took inspiration from the fine arts, leading to the limited-edition Prague Olibanum incense sticks. Contemporary Czech painter, Lucie Jindrák Skrivánková, designed the visual concept of the product, which evokes the scent of Prague’s old world. She worked with black, matte textures and gold decoration, giving a unique experience to the touch and representing the extravagance of the city and the brand.

Pigmentarium continue to collaborate with international artists, including poet Michaela Fenkl, sculptor Pauline Hagant, and fashion designer Arturo Obegero, all of whom have become ambassadors for the brand.

Sustainability, ethical practice, and locally driven thinking are the company’s core. The fragrances are produced by hand in the Pigmentarium atelier in Czechia, and the packaging is made by Studio Činčera, a family-owned company in Prague.
